I got me some new Silkie chicks…
I‘ve gone a little nuts with the chickens lately. Yes, I already have
26 about 25 chickens (including 12 pullets and 1 rooster). Do I really need more?
Some might say I’m getting a little crazy…my husband for sure thinks this after taking over his shed. ;) It’s really all I seem to be talking about other than homeschool…I must be driving my nurse co-workers crazy!
But…I have my heart set on having a self-sufficient home some day (and maybe a little urban farm). My goal is to get about 2 dozen eggs a day. Right now I’m only getting about 10. That doesn’t even cover what my family eats a day. I’m also not getting enough eggs to barter for other goods with the neighbors. Soon my neighbor will come to my door with a fresh loaf of bread and I’ll have nothing to give her.
Since getting 12 chicks in the beginning of May (see Keep Chickens), I am feeling a bit more confident about going through the chick process one more time this year. I didn’t lose any chicks…at least not yet. They are 4 months old and fully integrated with the big girls (and dude). It has been a very smooth transition.
Feeling ambitious, yesterday I got four Silkie chicks and one Americana cross.
Awww, isn’t it cute?
Between moving all the ladies to the new Converted Shed/Coop and bringing in a new bunch of chirpers, my beautiful Araucana doesn’t know what to think…she looks ticked.
I haven’t told my husband that Silkies only lay a “fair” amount of eggs though. They are small too…supposedly they are better at being mommas and are nice to kids. I’m setting up my chicken producing future with these ladies.
And besides, Silkies have to be one of the funniest looking creatures around. It will make my day that much brighter to see something like this waddling around in the back.
Did you know that they actually have dark blue/black meat and bones? It is the weirdest thing I’ve seen outside the Emergency Department!
I guess I should mention that I am getting
7 more chicks a few more chicks next week when they hatch…yes, I’m crazy! Umm…yeah…and my daughter is awaiting a new rabbit she will be getting within the week…and we are talking about getting a couple goats…yeah, crazy!
What kind of animals or other madness do you have going on in your home right now?
I’d love to hear about funny stories:)
